Lincoln Portrait is an
orchestral work written by the American composerAaron Copland . The work involves a fullorchestra , with particular emphasis on the brass section at climactic moments. The work is narrated with the reading of excerpts ofAbraham Lincoln 's great documents, including theGettysburg Address . "Lincoln Portrait" was written by Copland as part of theWorld War II patriotic war effort in1942 . The composition has also been transcribed for other ensembles, such aswind ensemble .Copland was asked to write a musical portrait of an "eminent American", by the conductor
Andre Kostelanetz . Originally, Copland wanted to portrayWalt Whitman , but it was decided that a political figure was needed. "From this moment, Lincoln seemed inevitable" (Copland). Copland used material from speeches and letters of Lincoln and quoted original folk songs of the period, including "Camptown Races" and "Springfield Mountain". He finished the piece in April 1942 and its first performance was by theCincinnati Symphony Orchestra onMay 14 ,1942 , with William Adams as the narrator.Instrumentation
