Palmyra Township is a township in Wayne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,127 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.9 km²), of which, 15.9 square miles (41.2 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km²) of it (1.67%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,127 people, 448 households, and 326 families residing in the township. The population density was 70.9 people per square mile (27.4/km²). There were 576 housing units at an average density of 36.3/sq mi (14.0/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 97.96% White, 0.27% African American, 0.62% Asian, 0.27% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.77% of the population.

There were 448 households out of which 29.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% were married couples living together, 9.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 24.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the township the population was spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 23.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 85.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.4 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $40,781. Males had a median income of $30,938 versus $25,284 for females. The per capita income for the township was $19,359. About 6.1% of families and 11.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.6% of those under age 18 and 10.1% of those age 65 or over.
