Klever Sailema case

Klever Sailema case

The Klever Sailema or "Abandoned baby case" involves the abandonment of a about 6 months old baby in New York City. A cabdriver, named Klever Sailema, dropped off the baby at a firehouse in Queens February 28 2008, claiming someone had left her in his car, to help an overwhelmed family abandon the child. Sailema, 44, provided enough detail that police released a sketch of the suspect. He repeated his tale to reporters at a news conference on February 29 2008. A 23-year-old family friend, Stuart Caban, took the teenage mother to police February 29 2008 evening after finding her walking in the Bronx, carrying a newspaper with her daughter's picture and sobbing. The mother was depressed, scared, crying. She loved her daughter. She wanted to be with her. She ran away after a violent fight with the father.

The cabdriver was arrested March 1 2008 with filing a false report, and he and his girlfriend were with criminal facilitation. Telephone calls seeking comment from Sailema and his girlfriend rang unanswered. The baby's mother will probably not face charges because of her age. Investigators were still hunting for the child's 27-year-old father.

The case had captivated New York City after pictures of the adorable baby girl -- who police now say was born to a 14-year-old girl and a man nearly twice her age -- were published in newspapers and broadcast on TV. On April 7, 2008, Sailema and Siavichay's lawyer, Kevin B. Faga, joined in an application of the Queens County District Attorney's Office for an Adjournment in Contemplation of Dismissal as to all charges against Sailema and Siavichay. The parties agreed that everyone had the welfare of the baby in mind at all times. As long as Sailema and Siavichay obey the law for the next 6 months, the charges will be dismissed and the records sealed.
