Robert Cowton was a
Franciscan theologian active at theUniversity of Oxford early in thefourteenth century . He was a follower ofHenry of Ghent , [Antonie Vos, "The Philosophy of John Duns Scotus" (2006), p. 50.] and in theAugustinian tradition. [Alister E. McGrath, "The Intellectual Origins of the European Reformation" (2003), p. 84.] He was familiar with the doctrines ofDuns Scotus andThomas Aquinas , and attempted a synthesis of themJ. I. Catto, "Theologians 1220-1320" in "The History of the University of Oxford" (1984), p. 512.] .He entered the Franciscan Order before age 13. [William J. Courtenay, "Adam Wodeham: An Introduction to His Life and Writings" (1978), p. 46.] He presented a commentary on the "
Sentences " ofPeter Lombard around 1310 [ M. J. F. M. Hoenen, "Marsilius of Inghen: Divine Knowledge in Late Medieval Thought" (1993), p. 179.] . Later, in an abbreviated form, this became a standard textbook of theology. The work was criticised by Thomas Sutton [Hoenen, p. 46.] .Notes
