Murcia Jewish community

The Jewish community in Murcia, Spain, dates back hundreds of years in terms of influence in the culture of Murcia. Nowadays the Jewish community has grown due to emmigration from the north of Europe as Murcia has become a settling place for retirees from colder countries in the north parts of the European Community.

Jews from Germany, England and Holland now call Murcia home. Jews from Madrid and Barcelona as well have moved here with children for the warmer weather. In Polaris World, a new community in Murcia, there is now a synagogue, Jewish school, rabbi and kosher market.

The Jewish Community Center in Polaris World offers classes in Hebrew with Israelis who as well live here, classes in Jewish Israeli dance, Yiddish, and serves as a centerpiece for celebrating all Jewish holidays: Hannukah, Passover etc. [ [http://ayunt.murcia.googlepages.com/home ayunt.murcia - HebreoCollege Murcia empezamos en 2003 como escuela privada en polaris world para 214 familias jud ] ] The Jews here are not very religious, in fact, many are atheists as they self-define.

As for antisemitism, it is for the most part absent. Local Murcianos see the Jews as members of the overall Murcian community. In fact, the King of Spain has said that Jews in his country are not a part of nostalgia, but have always been here since before the first king and have never totally left.
