History

Linwood Yard started operations in 1979 while the NS was still being called the Southern Railway, the project cost $49 million to build west of Linwood, North Carolina. The yard is 275 acres and 4.5 miles long, more than 1,000 employees serve the yard. And the yard reassembles more than 3,000 cars a day.

Today more than 65 miles of rail and ballast keep the yard busy for NS customers. The Yard moves freight and cargo to get them to their final destinations for more than the 20 freight trains coming to and from Linwood Yard every day. The yard is on the Edge of Norfolk Southern's Charlotte District and Danville District, with the near by Asheville District in near by Salisbury with more than several trains to and from Linwood on The S-Line a day.
