Teguise is a Canarian municipality in the north-central and the eastern portion of the island of
Lanzarote in the Las Palmas province in theCanary Islands The population is 14,214 ( [http://www.gobiernodecanarias.org/istac/ ISTAC] ,2003 ), its density is 53.84/km² and the area is 263.98 km². The town population is around 3,000. The population doubling time is about 20 years and the growth between 2001 and 2003 was at 10.14% It is located north of Arrecife on a main highway of LZ1 and south of Haría. The main industry are agriculture and tourism. TheAtlantic Ocean is to the northwest and east and the mountains are around the municipality.Farmlands dominate the rest of the municipality.
César Manrique was born in the area. The insect of the island is thecochineal whichcarmine , a dye is extracted from.The municipality also comprises a number of neighbouring islands including Graciosa,
Alegranza ,Roque del Este ,Roque del Oeste andMontaña Clara .Geography

The town was founded in
1414 . Teguise served as the capital of the island until the capital moved to Arrecife in1852 .Other
Teguise has schools, lyceums, a gymnasia, a church, beaches, a port, a post office, parks and a squares ("plaza") including Plaza de la Constitución.
