John Wesley Hoyt (1831ndash
May 29 ,1912 ) was an American politician and educator.Born in
Worthington, Ohio , in 1831, he graduated fromOhio Wesleyan University and attained a degree from a medical college in Ohio. He moved toWisconsin in 1857 and became active in politics. While in Wisconsin, he served as manager of the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society and was editor for the "Wisconsin Farmer and Northern Cultivator". He served as United States and Wisconsin commissioner to the1862 International Exhibition inLondon and again at the 1867 Exposition Universelle inParis . From 1874 to 1876, he was chairman of the Wisconsin State Railway Association [cite book |title=History of Wyoming |last=Larson |first=T.A. |authorlink= |coauthors= |year= |publisher=OECD Online Bookshop |location= |isbn=9264171231 |pages=pp.133-134] .On April 10, 1878, President
Rutherford B. Hayes appointed Hoyt as governor of theTerritory of Wyoming , replacing John Thayer. He served in that capacity until 1882.Hoyt was a strong supporter of education. Under the direction of Secretary of State
William Steward he prepared a large study on education in America and Europe. In 1887, following a brief time living inCalifornia , Hoyt returned to Wyoming to become the first president of theUniversity of Wyoming [cite web|url=http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/dictionary/index.asp?action=view&term_id=2290&term_type_id=1&term_type_text=People&letter=H|title=Hoyt, John Welsley 1831-1812|publisher=Wisconsin Historical Society] .
