The Ayres Uakari ("Cacajao ayresii") is a newly discovered species of monkey from the Brazilian Amazon. It was found by Jean-Phillipe Boubli of the University of Auckland after following native Yanomamo Indians on their hunts along the Rio Aracá, a tributary of the Rio Negro in Brazil. A formal description of "C. ayresii" has been published in the International Journal of Primatology. This monkey is named after Brazilian biologist José Márcio Ayres, formerly a senior zoologist for the Wildlife Conservation Society. José Márcio Ayres died in 2003 and helped creating a protected zone in the heart of the Amazon.Hansford, Dave. (2008) New Monkey Species Found in Remote Amazon. National Geographic News ( [http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2008/02/080204-new-monkey.html available online] )]

According to Boubli, this monkey should immediately be considered endangered, as it lives outside of any protected area and is hunted by locals.cite web | title = New monkey species is already endangered | date = 2008-01-19 | accessdate = 2008-01-19 | url = http://environment.newscientist.com/channel/life/endangered-species/mg19726393.400-new-monkey-species-is-already-endangered.html | work = New Scientist]

According to Boubli's 2008 study [Boubli, J. P.; Silva, M. N. F.; Amado, M. V.; Hrbek, T.; Pontual, F. B.; Farias, I. P. (2008) A Taxonomic Reassessment of Cacajao melanocephalus Humboldt (1811), with the Description of Two New Species. "International Journal of Primatology", online at [http://www.springerlink.com/content/n872170168h13014/fulltext.html] ] , there are now four species within the "Cacajao" genus: "C. calvus, C. melanocephalus, C. hosomi" and "C. ayresi".
