Glyn Warren Philpot (
October 5 1884 –December 16 1937 ), was an English artist, best known for his portraits of contemporary figures such asSiegfried Sassoon .Philpot was born in
Clapham London , but the family moved toHerne in Kent shortly afterwards. Although homosexual, Philpot was a practising Christian who converted toRoman Catholicism .Philpot was elected to the
Royal Academy in 1923. Some of his later work was considered controversial in its time because of the explicit sexual imagery, and this led to a loss of popularity which caused him financial hardship.Exhibitions have been held at The
