The 2006 Las Vegas Bowl was an NCAA-sanctioned Division I post-season college football bowl game between the Oregon Ducks and the Brigham Young University Cougars. The Las Vegas Bowl gets its first choice of bowl-eligible teams from the Mountain West Conference (MWC) and the fourth/fifth choice (alternating every year) of bowl-eligible teams from the Pacific-10 Conference (Pac-10). This bowl game was played on December 22, 2006 at 5 p.m. PST at 40,000-seat Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA where this bowl game has been played since 1992. It was broadcast on ESPN and ESPNHD. Since 2001, the game has featured a matchup of teams from the MWC and Pac-10.

Game Summary

The 2006 Las Vegas Bowl was a good old fashioned spanking. After a scoreless first quarter, BYU jumped ahead and never looked back scoring 17 points in the second quarter. John Beck lead the Cougars to a 38-8. The had no answer for Jonny Harline who had 9 catches for 181 yards and a touchdown.

Before the game the Ducks including coach Mike Belotti derided the BYU team and publicly stated that they could not compete with a Pac-10 team. Even after the shellacking Mike Bellotti refused to give BYU any respect reasserting his earlier statement that BYU would not even be a mid range team in the Pac-10.

Additional notes

*This was the Cougars first bowl victory since defeating Kansas State in the 1996 Cotton Bowl.

*This was Oregon's fourth straight bowl loss. This embarrassing defeat further established the belief amongst college football pundits that the Ducks are a mid tier program incapable of competing with the big boys.
