- Roer (department)
Roer is the name of a département of the
First French Empire in present dayGermany and theNetherlands . It was named after the riverRur , which flows through the département. It was formed in 1795, when theSouthern Netherlands and the left bank of theRhine were occupied by the French. The département de la Roer was formed from the duchies of Jülich and Cleves, the part of theArchbishopric of Cologne left of the Rhine, the free city ofAachen , thePrussia n part of the duchy ofGuelders and some smaller territories. In1805 the cityWesel was added to the département.The capital was Aix-la-Chapelle. The département was subdivided in the following

1814 , the département was divided between theUnited Kingdom of the Netherlands (left bank of the Meuse and a strip along its right bank includingGennep ,Tegelen and Sittard, in presentLimburg (Netherlands) ) and theKingdom of Prussia (provinceJülich-Cleves-Berg , presently part ofNorth Rhine-Westphalia ,Germany ).
