History

The Cebu Institute of Technology was established in 1946 through the initiative and vision of its Founder and First President, the late Dr. Nicolas G. Escario Sr.. The groundwork for its establishment can also be attributed to the efforts of Engr. Fidel C. Dagani Sr., Engr. Amancio A. Alcordo and Engr.Jose A. Cavan who convinced the Board of Trustees of the feasibility and wisdom of opening an engineering school. The plan took its final form when Dr. Nicolas G. Escario Sr., as President, Don Rodolfo T. Lizares Sr., as Vice-President and Don Simplicio Lizares as Chairman of the Board of Trustees pooled their resources together to put up the necessary school facilities and services.

The Cebu Institute of Technology opened its doors 1946 with two pre-fabricated huts in F. Ramos Street. With 512 students, the School started its High School and College departments. It offered the following courses: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Architecture, and Vocational Courses.

With the objective of gearing higher education to the needs of the time, non-technical courses were later offered, the first of which was Liberal Arts courses in 1947. This was followed by Pharmacy and Junior Normal Course in 1948 and Education in 1949. The Vocational department was closed in 1951 and in its stead the College of Commerce was opened. In 1953, Sanitary Engineering was offered. In order to meet the demands of the other professions, the Pre-medicine was offered in 1957 followed by the Secretarial in 1958. Two years later, the Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering was started. The Pre-Nursing course and the college of Nursing (with the Cebu Velez College affiliation) were offered in 1960. Foreseeing the hi-tech demands for technology and social sciences towards the 21st century. The Industrial Engineering Department started a program in 1968 for future leaders in business and industry. There was no stopping towards the leap to the future, so the Electronics and Communications Engineering was officially started in 1983.

In keeping abreast with the exponential growth in this information age, special computer courses were offered in 1983 under the Computer Department. Then 1996 was an auspicious year for the Computer Department was renamed department of Computer Studies when its ladderized curriculum was given government permit to operate its BS Information & Computer Science, BS Computer Management, BS Computer Technology and BS Computer Engineering with their corresponding Associate Certificates.

When Rodolfo Lizares, Sr. took over the presidency of the school in 1958 upon the untimely demise of the Founder and President, Dr. Nicholas G. Escario Sr., the school had eight semi-permanent buildings located in the C. Padilla Campus.

Resourceful and bold in his program for progress, President Lizares replaced these buildings one by one, with the modern edifices and consequently added facilities in line with his progressive concept of education and the newest trends in school planning.

President Lizares, with his abiding faith in education of the youth and a pronounced and perceptible show of his vigorous leadership acquired in 1965 a new site at the Rizal Avenue on which has risen a modern four-storey building. In 1971, the college graduating class has moved to Rizal Avenue (now N. Bacalso Avenue) campus and gradually the rest of the college followed. The new campus soon housed the administrative staff, the college academic building, the well-equipped college library, engineering and science laboratories and provided sprawling grounds for parking, athletics and ROTC purposes. In the later part of 1978, President Lizares took the boldest step, in his educational administration by engaging a multi-million development plan under the Educational Project Implementing Task Force (EDPITAF) of the government. Through the program, CIT became the Resource Base Institution for Engineering in the Visayas and Mindanao Region.

The passing away of President Rodolfo T. Lizares Sr., in 1991 passed on to the then Executive Vice-President Gregorio L. Escario the responsibility and commitment to bring CIT to the year 2000. Today we see more educational ventures are undertaken by the third CIT President, Mr. Gregorio L. Escario.

One of the bold steps he made was the opening of the Kindergarten School in 1992 and reopening of the Elementary Department in 1993 with the vision giving the youngest Technologians a headstart for their future.

Aside from continuing the leadership in education in the three academic levels, he has given full support to a newly organized program for industry and academe linkage. This endeavor will ensure that students and instructors will be provided with a continuing learning to meet the challenge of the future.
