Alando Soakai was born on 11th May 1983 in West Auckland, New Zealand.He is of Tongan descent and was educated at Auckland Grammar School in 1997-2001, playing 1st XV Rugby with current professional rugby players Ben Atiga, Benson Stanley and Isa Nacewa.He shifted south to Dunedin, Otago in 2002 for education study and rugby opportunities.

He is aNew Zealand Rugby Union player who has represented Southland Rugby Football Union in 2004 while on loan by Otago.Is currently playing provincial rugby for Otago since 2005-present.A loyal and experience flanker who has learnt his trade from the likes of Craig Newby and Josh Blackie. He currently represents the Super 14 team the Highlanders since 2007.

He is also an accomplished New Zealand Sevens player representing the sliver-fern in 2006 and 2007 where he successfully won a Commonwealth Gold Medal in Melbourne 2006 and a IRB World Sevens Series title in 2007.
