Indian Astronomical Observatory

Indian Astronomical Observatory

The Indian Astronomical Observatory, operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, stands on a 4,500 meters (14,764 feet) peak in the western Himalayas near the village of Hanle, in eastern Ladakh, India. Located at coord|32|46|46|N|78|57|51|E| and 4,500 m (14,764 feet), it is the highest telescope in the world. Before it became operational in 2001, the highest telescope was at the Meyer-Womble Observatory.

The location of the observatory (and the village) are highly sensitive due to the close proximity of the Tibetan / Chinese border and special permission is needed to visit by the Indian Government.
