Born inAizu , she was the sister of the "karō ",Yamakawa Hiroshi ; her other siblings included physicistYamakawa Kenjiro and Meiji-era social figureOyama Sutematsu . Futaba took part in the defense ofTsuruga Castle in theBoshin War (1868-9). She was also briefly married toKajiwara Heima , another Aizu "karō ".In the
Meiji era , Futaba worked at the Nihongo3|Tōkyō Joshi Kōtō Shihan Gakkō|東京女子高等師範学校|Tokyo Women's Normal School, [http://www.ndl.go.jp/portrait/datas/209.html] the forerunner ofOchanomizu University , during the tenure of fellow Aizu nativeTakamine Hideo as principal.
