5th Avenue (candy)

5th Avenue (candy)

The 5th Avenue candy bar is a crunchy peanut butter bar with a chocolatey coating, and is made by Hershey's. It was introduced in 1936 by William H. Luden, founder of Luden's cough drops. Luden's company changed hands a number of times and was most recently purchased by Hershey's Corporation in 1986. Luden's throat drops business sold to Pharmacia in 2001.

It is very similar to a Butterfinger candy bar. One difference between these two candy bars is that, until the Hershey takeover, 5th Avenue candy bars had three or four small almonds or almond pieces along the top center length of the bar, under the chocolate coating. Also, the 5th Avenue texture is a creamier, peanut-butter-based filling rather than the toffee crunch of Butterfinger. A modified 5th Avenue bar is sold under the Reese's brand as the Reese's Crispy Crunchy Bar.

The 5th Avenue bar was the favorite of Martinsville Speedway founder H. Clay Earles and, until his death, was the only candy bar sold at the speedway during races.Fact|date=April 2008

World War II forced Luden’s to concentrate production efforts on Luden's menthol throat drops and 5TH AVENUE candy bars for military use. Immediately following the war, Luden's reverted to producing a full line of confectionery products including the famous Luden's menthol throat drops and 5TH AVENUE candy bar, as well as penny candy consisting of ladyfingers, pillowcases, mint patties, penny jujube novelties, penny hard candy, penny coconut novelties, cast marshmallow novelties, and a line of penny sugar-rolled jellies.

In the 1994 film Stargate, Daniel Jackson makes first contact with the Abydonian people by offering their leader a 5th avenue bar.
