Eddie Lucio III is a Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives, representing the 38th District since 2007.

Representative Eddie Lucio III was born and raised in the city of Brownsville, Texas. He attended Texas Tech University on an athletic scholarship. He later received a B.B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin. In 2005, he received his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from the University of Texas School of Law.

In 2006, he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives and was overwhelmingly re-elected in 2008. Rep. Lucio represents District 38, which is composed of the southwest region of Cameron County.

During his first session in the Legislature, Representative Eddie Lucio III was honored to represent the people of the Rio Grande Valley by attaining passage on significant legislation and serving on prestigious committees. Rep. Lucio's accomplishments are all in areas that are extremely essential to the development and long term interests of South Texas.

Career and Technology education is a key component of our education system and is vital to many industries in our area. Representative Lucio passed House Bill 2383 during the 80th legislative session, which will reimburse students for the cost associated with taking a state certification exam if the student completes a career and technology education program, graduates from high school, meets the financial need requirement, and passes the certification exam.

Higher Education is the key to ending the cycles of poverty and unstable economic factors facing all who live along the Texas-Mexico border. Rep. Lucio understands the importance of further assisting our local colleges and universities achieve a higher standard of prominence; while providing our local students the opportunities and experiences offered by major and flagship universities. Representative Lucio passed HB 1505, which authorized the development of new athletic programs for the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College.

The issue of safety in the colonias of the Rio Grande Valley has always been extremely important to Representative Lucio. He worked hard to protect these areas by collaborating on a bill that will help bring streetlights to these neighborhoods. Under previous law, counties were unable to make improvements such as streetlights and drainage systems. Working closely with other legislators Rep. Lucio co-authored House Bill 573, which gave counties the authority to install streetlights.

Many times victims of sexual assault and other crimes are forced to live in fear of retaliation. For this reason, Representative Lucio joint authored House Bill 569 to create an address confidentiality program that will help protect these victims. This program will create a state address that mail can be sent to and forwarded to the victim's home address.

Representative Lucio also helped to preserve Hispanic culture by amending House Bill 539 to allow the use of fireworks during the Cinco de Mayo celebration. This amendment demonstrates how much importance he places on the distinct cultural traditions of South Texas.

Representative Eddie Lucio III was able to work diligently for the people of District 38 on three important committees. As a freshman member of the powerful Appropriations committee, he works to create a state budget that is both fair and responsible.

During the 80th Legislative Session Rep. Lucio was instrumental in acquiring, more funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program, colonia assistance programs and pay increases for teachers and state employees. Representative Lucio also worked diligently to secure $5 million in funding for the Regional Academic Health Science Center in Harlingen, Texas $9.9 million for improvements to the Rio Grande State Center, and $600,000 in matching funds for the Gladys Porter Zoo.

In the Local and Consent Calendars Committee, he had the opportunity to assist in finding legislative solutions for localized problems throughout the State of Texas.

Rep. Lucio III is honored to serve as the Chairman of Budget Oversight for the Environmental Regulation Committee, where he continually strives to keep our State environmentally clean in order to ensure the health and safety of the people of Texas.

After serving in Environmental Regulation, Rep. Lucio has garnered a true appreciation for all issues pertaining to the environment, natural and renewable resources. He is actively pursuing to gain a deep understanding of what the future holds for Texas when it comes to these issues, from all sides of the subject, and hopes to become a true advocate for them.

Rep. Lucio is extremely humbled by the faith and support of the people of District 38 and is committed to continue to bring about real progress for the Rio Grande Valley.

Representative Lucio III is the son of State Senator & Mrs. Eddie Lucio, Jr. He is married to his beautiful wife Mrs. Jaime Lucio of Brownsville. Representative Lucio is currently an attorney in South Texas with the firm of Rodriguez & Nicolas.
