Battle of Haw River

Late in February 1781, General Cornwallis dispatched Tarleton to protect Loyalist Militiamen who were assembling and to escort them safely to Hillsborough NC. From spies Henry Lee learned of the enemies activity and set out to overtake and surprise Tarleton. He never found his prey but on February 25, 1781 Lee's forces learned that a four-hundred-man loyalist force under Colonel John Pike was nearby. Lee fell on the Tories taking them by surprise - the Loyalists mistook Lee's green-jacketed men for Tarleton's legion. Lee's men cut them to pieces.
