North Abington Township is a township in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located approximately 10 miles north of Scranton, Pennsylvania and is located in the growing suburban area known as the "Abingtons." North Abington is also approximately 6 miles north of Clarks Summit and borders Abington township and Dalton borough to the south, as well as Benton township to the north. The population was 782 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 9.5 square miles (24.6 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 782 people, 258 households, and 212 families residing in the township. The population density was 82.6 people per square mile (31.9/km²). There were 275 housing units at an average density of 29.0/sq mi (11.2/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 95.65% White, 0.64% African American, 0.13% Native American, 2.17% Asian, 0.26% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.64% of the population.

There were 258 households out of which 38.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.3% were married couples living together, 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.8% were non-families. 16.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.13.

In the township the population was spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 29.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 113.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 108.2 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $57,917, and the median income for a family was $70,625. Males had a median income of $56,875 versus $26,964 for females. The per capita income for the township was $35,537. About 2.5% of families and 3.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.0% of those under age 18 and 6.1% of those age 65 or over.

Education

The are currently no public schools within the boundaries of North Abington. All students residing in North Abington attend schools in the top-ranked Abington Heights School District. Elementary students attend Waverly Elementary School, middle school students at Abington Heights Middle School, and high school students at Abington Heights High School.

Parks

North Abington covers part of the Lackawanna State Park, which also stretches into Benton township. Lackawanna State Park is a place for hiking, fishing, camping, hunting, swimming, boating, bicycling, etc.
