website = Jermyn, known as "The Birthplace of First Aid in America," is aborough in Lackawanna County,Pennsylvania , on theLackawanna River , 12 miles (19 km) northeast of Scranton. A productiveanthracite coal field was in the region in 1900 when 2,567 people lived here. In 1910, 3,158 residents of Jermyn were tallied. In the early years of the twentieth century, coal mines, cut-glass works, silk, powder, grist, planing, and saw mills, bottling works, and fertilizer factories dotted the borough. The population was 2,287 at the 2000 census. Jermyn is the mailing address of the Lakeland School District. The section of town east of theLackawanna River and west of the small section ofArchbald known as "Nebraska" ,East Jermyn is commonly referred to as "Calico Lane" or "The Lane".Geography

census GR|2 of 2000, there were 2,287 people, 942 households, and 608 families residing in the borough. Thepopulation density was 2,931.3 people per square mile (1,132.1/km²). There were 1,012 housing units at an average density of 1,297.1/sq mi (500.9/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.47% White, 0.74% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.04% from other races, and 0.13% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.35% of the population.There were 942 households out of which 27.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.6% were married couples living together, 11.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.4% were non-families. 31.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the borough the population was spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $32,824, and the median income for a family was $39,740. Males had a median income of $29,063 versus $23,580 for females. The
per capita income for the borough was $17,417. About 8.9% of families and 12.7% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 19.3% of those under age 18 and 13.4% of those age 65 or over.References
