URA!

URA! is a gallery and project space based in Istanbul, Turkey. Itwas founded by artist Mihda Koray, a native of Istanbul who studied at
The Slade School of Fine Art in London, and is located on thefirst floor of the Misir Apartmani on Istiklal Avenue(Turkish: Istiklal Caddesi) in the Beyoğlu district ofthe city. URA! distinguishes itself as a gallery by drawing nodistinction between visual artists, musicians, and writers.

History

URA! opened in April 2007 with the intention of merging of music, clubculture and contemporary art within the same space, something that wasvery new in the Istanbul art scene. [ [http://www.artvehicle.com/ArtvehicleMailer/issue12/index.html Artvehicle -> Archive - Issue 12 ] ]

The first exhibition in April 2007 included work by Christian Egger, Adham Faramawy, Melissa Frost and Mihda Koray. The following exhibition, which ran as a parallel event during 10th Istanbul Biennial, featured the Slayer Pavilion and an additional curated music event headlined by the band Blurt, as well as reuniting the artists from the opening exhibition. URA! Zine

In September 2007 URA! launched its own newspaper, or zine. The first edition featured contributions by Ana da Silva of The Raincoats, Andrew Mania, Princess Julia, Adham Faramawy, Mark Aerial Waller, Max Sixteen, Thomas Hein, Ryan Styles, Slayer Pavilion, Russell Dean Stone, Melissa Frost, and Ulay Laysiepen, among others. Radio URA!

URA! has announced it's intention to branch into internet radio [ [http://www.myspace.com/uraproject MySpace.com - URA! - 24 - Fille - TR - www.myspace.com/uraproject ] ] , broadcasting it's bands and it's artists sound art.
