Stewart James Jackson (born 31 January 1965) is a British politician. He is currently the Conservative Member of Parliament for Peterborough.

Early life

Jackson was born in Woolwich and brought up in South East London and attended the London Nautical School, Southwark and later Chatham House Grammar School in Ramsgate, Kent before studying Economics and Public Administration at the University of London and was awarded a BA Honours degree in 1988. He also holds a MA degree in Human Resource Management from Thames Valley University in 2001 and is a Graduate Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (MCIPD).

Before joining Business Link, he worked for Lloyds Bank for nine years, and ran his own branch as a Branch Manager in London's West End, as well as being a small business manager. He was a Board Member and Trustee of the London City YMCA for 5 years. He also served on Ealing Borough Council in West London from 1990 to 1998, during which time he was Conservative spokesman on planning and housing.

Prior to being elected, Jackson was a Business Services Manager with Business Link in London.

Parliamentary career

He stood for the seat at the 2001 election, and had contested Brent South at the 1997 election.

Jackson was first selected for the Peterborough seat in October 2000 and fought the 2001 general election, reducing the Labour majority from 7323 to 2854 votes and was re-adopted on August 2002 for the 2005 general election. The current Peterborough seat will have two wards from NE Cambridgeshire added to it in the boundary changes prior to the next General Election, boosting Jackson's notional majority to 4,200 votes.

In the House of Commons, he is a member of the Regulatory Reform Select Committee and from December 11 2006, the Health Select Committee leaving it in July 2007 when he became an Opposition Whip and is also currently Vice Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Friends of Islam. He is also currently Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Pakistan.

He is also a Parliamentary champion for the premature baby charity [http://www.bliss.org.uk BLISS] and strongly supports the work of Peterborough-based charity ASBAH - the Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, supporting their campaign for the fortification of some foods with folic acid.

He serves on the Salvation Army Good Neighbours Scheme Board in Peterborough, as well as being Vice President of the Westgate at Risk church fundraising group and supporting the Thorpe Hall hospice of the charity Sue Ryder Care.

Stewart Jackson was appointed an Opposition Whip in the July 2007 reshuffle by Conservative Leader David Cameron. In January 2008, he became Shadow Minister for Communities and Local Government, with responsibility for the fire service, flooding, housing renewal and the Thames Gateway.

He was readopted as the Conservative candidate for the Peterborough constituency by the Executive Council of the Peterborough Conservative Association in July 2007.

Personal life

In July 1999, he married Sarah O'Grady, who is a journalist with the Daily Express. They have one daughter, born March 2005.
