- Pretty Little Dutch Girl
Pretty Little Dutch Girl is a children's
nursery rhyme ,clapping game andjump-rope rhyme . Unlike the reported history behind "Rock-a-bye Baby ", however, it is unknown who the original author is or when it was written. Several variations of the rhyme exist. The tune of the song is similar toA Sailor Went to Sea andMiss Suzie Had A Steamboat (though some notes are removed to account for the double-syllable words "pretty" and "little", and some notes are added in). The rhyme (and at least some of its variants) tells the story of a pretty girl (of Dutch origin, hence the song's title) who is popular with boys and has a boyfriend with some strange body parts; some versions mention that the boyfriend dumps the pretty Dutch girl in favor of an even prettier girl.In the
Wee Sing Video Series video "Grandpa's Magical Toys", the song is represented and sung by a blonde-hairedBarbie -like doll in Dutch traditional costume aptly named "Dutch Girl" (played by Jacque Drew) that enjoys jump-roping and is obsessed with the redribbon s tying her long braids together. The song is also available on the "Wee Sing" audio CD "Wee Sing and Play" as well; the sheet music (and clapping rhythm instructions) can be found in its lyrics book on page 53.Lyrics
