Ferry Beach Ecology School

Ferry Beach Ecology School

Ferry Beach Ecology School is a non-profit environmental education program started in 1998 in Saco, Maine. Since its inception, Ferry Beach Ecology School (FBES) has brought innovative ecology education programs to nearly 60,000 children and adults throughout New England.

FBES has a variety of programs geared primarily for upper elementary through middle school-aged children. Whether students come to Ferry Beach's coastal campus for a week-long residential program, or schools host a FBES outreach program at their own site, FBES's original ABCs of Ecology curriculum is tailored to meet each state's learning frameworks, under the auspices of the No Child Left Behind act, in addition to each school's specific curriculum. During the summer, children and adults may enroll in one of FBES's day camps, learning about organic gardening or exploring the many ecosystems of the southern Maine coast.

FBES staff also travel to regional and national conferences and summits, presenting original workshops and trainings on everything from food systems education and sustainability to innovative teaching methodology. FBES also published its own curriculum for educators and ecosystem-based field guide.

The FBES campus is located on Ferry Beach in Saco, Maine, about 30 minutes south of Portland and 90 minutes north of Boston. The stunning coastal campus is an ideal outdoor classroom with eight ecosystems within walking distance including a sand beach and dunes, tide pools, salt marshes, a forested state park, river estuary, tupelo bog, fishing village and jetty.
