"3" is the fourth album by Violent Femmes, released in early 1989. There are two theories held by fans of the band regarding the record's title: Perhaps, after the dismal reception of their actual third album, they wanted this record to be publicly perceived as their third. More likely, after all of the various guest musicians, horns, etc. that cluttered 1986's "The Blind Leading The Naked", the band wanted to emphasize its roots as a trio. The songs on "3" are performed by the three members of the band playing only drums, bass and guitar, with only the addition of keyboards and saxophone. Although many fans hailed the album as a return to the classic, stripped-down early sound of the band, the songs on the record have seldom been performed live since the 1989 tour in support of the album.

The song, "Fat" was featured in the film "Supersize Me".
