The Shadow is a fictional character from Cornelia Funke's "Inkheart" trilogy. It is described as a gigantic, dark, and faceless monster who serves the fire-raisers. The Shadow is said to be composed of the ashes of all the people that Capricorn had killed. It is filled with anger and pain and sorrow. Whenever there is an execution, Capricorn would call the Shadow to devour the hapless prisoners. At the end of Inkheart, he ultimately causes his and his master's death because of Meggie's and Mo's voice and Fenoglio's words.
