- Puerto Rico Highway 10
Puerto Rico Highway 10 is a main highway under construction in Puerto Rico intended to connect the cities of
Ponce andArecibo . It is in current construction but most of the highway has been completed. It is not a freeway, as several stop light traffic signals are in its length; but the width of its lanes, the presence of safety barriers and some exits make it a highway of high speed in comparison to rural roads which cannot be ride above 35 mph.Beginning close to PR-1 in Mercedita, it travels north towards Adjuntas, Utuado and finally in Arecibo where it meets PR-2 and PR-22. When completed, large trucks will be able to transit the highway, saving time instead of going along the west coast.
Old Highway 10
Puerto Rico Highway 10 was a rural road before, but it was so dangerous that the Department of Transportation decided to build a new, safer highway connecting north and south, mainly because the only wide highway connecting the north and south coasts of Puerto Rico (through the center) was PR-52. PR-10's construction caused problems in the beginning as part of the "Cordillera Central" was going to be affected. PR-10 was never planned to be an expressway like PR-52, as the traffic from Ponce to Arecibo is not as significant. Today, the old highway is signed as PR-123.
cenic Route
PR-10 goes up to the mountains, and it has several views to the Cordillera, which makes the route scenic. Several parts are being built in bridges. Though it won't be as dangerous as before, people will still need to be very cautious when driving the highway.
Current Status
PR-10 is completely parallel to PR-123. Motorists have to take this rural road while the segment between Adjuntas and Utuado, still remaining to be built, is finished. It takes about half hour to travel from the southern segment of PR-10 to its northern segment.
