Puerto Rico Highway 53

Puerto Rico Highway 53

Puerto Rico Highway 53 is a main tollway which parallels Puerto Rico Highway 3 going from Fajardo to Salinas. Some segments are still under construction, but when finished it will have near 95 kilometers of length and two tunnels about 1 km long each in the town of Maunabo. It will connect the cities of Fajardo, Ceiba, Naguabo, Humacao, Yabucoa, Maunabo, Patillas, Arroyo, Guayama and Salinas. Its northern terminus is at PR-3 and PR-194 in Fajardo, and its south terminus is at PR-52 in Salinas.

The highway will consist of near six tolls, five of which are open; Ceiba Norte, Humacao Norte, Humacao Sur, Guayama and Salinas. It is likely to do a final toll before entering the future tunnels and it might be most expensive of the six tolls. Contrary to PR-52 and PR-22 where all of the tolls have the E-ZPass-like lanes Auto Expreso, PR-53 at the beginning only had one, in Salinas (the final toll) but now it has been planned for the other tolls. Therefore, cash is needed in order to pay the toll if going from Salinas to Guayama in the terminus with PR-54 and PR-3, or Humacao from Fajardo. This is because the traffic in PR-53 is very low in comparison to PR-52 and PR-22.

There are no plans to extend PR-53 to PR-66 from Fajardo to Río Grande, probably because of the close location of the El Yunque National Forest.
