New York City and raised inLittle Neck, New York . He began attending classes at theArt Students League of New York in 1964, under the instruction ofartists such as Lennart Anderson [http://theartstudentsleague.org/bio_robert_n.html Art Students League biography] ] and Sidney Dickinson [http://theartstudentsleague.org/past_instructors.html Art Students League past instructors] ] . As a student he copiedold master s at theMetropolitan Museum of Art in New York and theBoston Museum of Fine Arts . His study of, among others, the paintersJan Vermeer ,Thomas Eakins ,Camille Corot , andCanaletto , developed his skills further. While attending theBoston University College of Fine Arts , from which he graduated "cum laude " in 1971, Neffson’s work attracted the attention of his professors, includingJames Weeks and theabstract expressionist painter,Philip Guston .He also studied at the
Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture inMaine and theTanglewood Institute inLenox, Massachusetts , both on full scholarship. Achieving his Master’s Degree in Fine Arts for Painting in 1973, again fromBoston University , Neffson taught briefly at theDeCordova Museum inLincoln, Massachusetts , andFisher College in Boston. Robert Neffson joined Hammer Galleries in
1998 , the New York institution which recently celebrated its 80th anniversary.
