June 8 , 1863 -February 4 , 1928 )was a German chemist and politician. He was born inBrandenburg an der Havel . After he received his PhD in 1884 from theUniversity of Berlin for his work withRobert Wilhelm Bunsen he started working at theBASF company. In 1891 he opened his own chemical company (which still operates today as Raschig GmbH [ [http://www.raschig.de/ www.raschig.de] Company Website] ). He patented a number of chemical processes, particularly relating tophenol s, one of which is now known as theRaschig phenol process . He also developed improvements todistillation , in particular theRaschig ring , small metal or ceramic rings which are used in commercialfractional distillation columns.Reference
