Farrell launched an attack on the opposition parties and on gay senator David Norris, in which he said "I am amazed at Senator Norris, an educated, intelligent man like him, is so obsessed with his favourite sexual activity that he put that before the welfare of the people who are being robbed and plundered", and went on to say "We are going, with our amendment to allow perverts of all kinds".cite web |url=http://historical-debates.oireachtas.ie/S/0124/S.0124.199005160005.html |title=Official Report (Seanad Éireann), Volume 124, 16 May 1990, Larceny Bill, 1989: Recommittal and Fifth Stage. |publisher=Oireachtas |accessdate=2008-02-17] Farrell's comments were criticised by senators from all parties, includingTras Honan , a formerCathaoirleach , andFine Gael called his remarks "vicious".cite news |url=http://www.ireland.com/newspaper/archive/1990/0518/Pg002.html#Ar00205:4F650852251D4F559A5225AF53B62D5666424F948E5AD4D958363A5AA64F |title=FG spokesman calls attack on Norris 'vicious' |date=18 May 1990 |work=The Irish Times |page=p.2 |accessdate=2008-02-17]The following day, Farrell made a statement to the Seanad in which he said that his remarks were "completely misconstrued" and that "the record of the House will show I was specifically speaking about blackmail". He added "I am very sorry about the use of the word 'pervert'. I did not mean it in the context … I did not mean it to affect anybody in this House and I was not referring to anybody in this House".cite web |url=http://historical-debates.oireachtas.ie/S/0124/S.0124.199005170003.html |title=Official Report (Seanad Éireann), Volume 124, 17 May 1990, Personal Explanation by Member |publisher=Oireachtas |accessdate=2008-02-17] cite news |url=http://www.ireland.com/newspaper/archive/1990/0518/Pg002.html#Ar00205:4F650852251D4F559A5225AF53B62D5666424F948E5AD4D958363A5AA64F |title=Farrell says perverts remark misconstrued |date=
