History

The name Lignac probably comes from Roman descent. During the Roman occupation there appears to have been a rich land owner called Linius in the area. There are references to Liniacum and Villa Linii in some sources.

Within the commune lies the hamlet of Château Guillaume, this was once a commune in its own right up until 1829. The château was at its height between the years of 1087 and 1112 when it was the home of Guillaume IX, Duke of Aquitaine. Said to be the home of Eleanor of Aquitaine, consort of both King Louis VII of France and King Henry II of England.

The Château of Lignac was constructed in the 15th century and was situated in the centre of the village. All that remains today are the feet of two pillars to the old gateway.

The Church of St Christophe dates back to around the XI and XII centuries, there is a mention of the church in department archives from 1630.
