Miami University 's student run internet radio station. Located in William's Hall on Miami's campus in Oxford, OH, WMSR has been broadcasting for over 20 years. The station's programming is provided entirely by student DJ's and staff. Playing everything from new indie rock and acoustic world beats to soul, mash-ups, and hip-hop, WMSR is currently accessible from all over the world via their website and on university cable channel 63.History
The roots of WMSR begin in 1981 when eight students turned a cassette tape deck, two turn tables, a microphone, and a used console from WMUB into Miami’s first student-run radio station.
The students broadcasted on an AM wavelength from the student activities wing of Shriver Center and were on-air twelve hours a day, seven days a week.
The members expanded their programming to news broadcasts and live shows in 1984 and by 1989 they had outgrown its headquarters and moved to the old WMUB studios in Sawyer Hall where they received their first CD players.
WMSR moved into three cramped rooms in MacMillian Hall in 1994 and membership swelled to more than 225 members who broadcasted from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. everyday.
In 1997, a new, larger studio was built on the second floor of Williams Hall which is where the station is currently located.
While in-studio programming is WMSR’s primary focus, they also organize many off-air activities.
The organization plans concerts in bars in uptown Oxford featuring local bands, holds remotes to promote events on campus, and conducts interviews with celebrities who come to speak at Miami.
