He unsuccessfully fought the seat in the 2001 general election, having failed to improve on the large drop in popularity experienced by the previousTory MP. In December 2005, he was appointedShadow Minister for Transport with special responsibility for rail, buses and London.Stephen Hammond was elected a
councillor for Village ward, Wimbledon in theLondon Borough of Merton election in 2002 and was deputy leader of the Conservative Group on the Council. He did not stand again at the 2006 elections.External links
