Rufus L. Edmisten is a former
North Carolina Secretary of State, Attorney General, and candidate for Governor in 1984. He is currently a lawyer in private practice.Originally from
Boone, NC , Edmisten served for ten years on the staff of U.S. SenatorSam Ervin . In 1973-1974, Edmisten was a staff counsel for theSenate Watergate Committee , which Ervin chaired. Edmisten served the subpoena to the White House for the Watergate tapes. He then returned to North Carolina and was elected the state's attorney general. Edmisten served in that post for ten years. Following his years as Attorney General, Edmisten was the Democratic nominee for Governor in 1984 (losing to RepublicanJames G. Martin ). He served as NC Secretary of State for two terms (1989-1996) after his campaign for Governor.Edmisten runs a charity in North Carolina called Extra Special Super Kids. The Super Kids program provides scholarships for college to underpriveledged high school students wishing to pursue higher learning.
Edmisten has a governmental law practice in Raleigh, where he lives with his wife Linda and his dog Nellie.
