- Fort Stoddert
Fort Stoddert was a fort in the
Mississippi Territory (todayAlabama ). The fort, built in 1799, was named for theBenjamin Stoddert , the secretary to theContinental Board of War during theAmerican Revolution andSecretary of the Navy during theQuasi War .It was located near north of Mobile at Mount Vernon Landing on the
Mobile River , close to the confluence of the Tombigbee andAlabama River s. It served as the western terminus of the Federal Road which ran through Creek lands toFort Wilkinson , Georgia.Aaron Burr was held here after his arrest in1807 fortreason against theUnited States .Fort Stoddert served as the outpost for the Mississippi
Militia during theCreek War (1813–1814).References
