Temoaya is a municipality in Mexico State, Mexico. It is a very cold place because of its altitude which averages 2,750 metres (9,022 ft) above mean sea level.cite web |url=http://www.estadodemexico.com.mx/portal/temoaya/index.php?id=1 |author=Estado de México |title=Estado de México-Temoaya |accessdate=2008-01-28 es icon] The municipality has 199.63 km² of surface and a population (2005) of 77,714.

The name comes from the Nahuatl "temoa" (to go down) and "yan" (effect), so Temoaya means place which goes down. The municipal seat was founded officially on September 18 1720 by the archbishop don Joseph de Lansiego y Eguilás. It was established because the viceroy of Nueva España(Mexico) ordered putting all the Otomies together in order to be evangelized.

In 2000, Temoaya had an economically active population of 18,504 inhabitants, with the agricultural sector being the most prominent. Some 88.25% of the cultivated land is devoted to corn, with other cereals and fruits making up the the remainder.

Temoaya is a town characterized of its traditions and its festivities. The Centro Ceremonial Otomí is a local tourist promotional center located some 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) from the town of Temoaya's central district, dedicated to the cultural patrimony of the indigenous Otomi.
