Saddam Hussein Gymnasium

Saddam Hussein Gymnasium

Saddam Hussein Gymnasium is a sports complex in Baghdad, Iraq.

Designed by Le Corbusier under the commission of King Faisal II in 1956. [cite book | last = Gans | first = Deborah| title = The Le Corbusier Guide| date = 2006 |pages = 154-155 | Publisher = Princeton Architectural Press |ISBN = 1-56898-539-8 | url= http://books.google.com/books?id=nmXS12Lo0xMC] After Faisal II was overthrown in a military coup in 1958 and the project was put aside. Saddam Hussein's revolutionary government revived the project by building an indoor 3,000 seat stadium and an adjacent, open-air amphitheater linked by an enormous sliding door which, when opened, integrates the two stadia.
