2011 Rugby World Cup - Africa qualification

2011 Rugby World Cup - Africa qualification

In the African Regional Qualifying Process, 14 of the 15 eligable IRB member nations will be taking part (South Africa have already qualified from Rugby World Cup 2007).

The Qualifying process began with playoffs in May 2008 to decide the competitors in the 2009 Africa Cup. The Africa Cup will be the qualifying method, with the winner being Africa's direct qualifier. The runner-up of the tournament will be entered into the 4 team World Cup playoff for the 20th 2011 Rugby World Cup finalist berth.

The Cup will be decided first by 4 pools of 3 teams with the pool winners qualifying for the semi-finals.

Preliminary Round: Africa Cup Qualifying Playoffs - May 2008

The two, single legged playoffs were used to cut the nations down from the 14 eligable nations to the 12 who will compete for the 2009 Africa Cup. They were chosen due to being the lowest ranked teams in the north & south respectively. After this round Nigeria & Swaziland were eliminated.
