Matthew Holden

Matthew Holden, Jr. is an American political scientist. Holden attended public schools in Mississippi and Chicago, Illinois, the University of Chicago in 1946-50, and received a B.A. degree from Roosevelt University in political science in 1954. He received an M.A. in 1956 and a Ph.D. in 1961 from Northwestern University.

From 1955-57, Holden served in the Army in Korea.

He taught political science at the University of Illinois, Wayne State University, and the University of Pittsburgh. From 1969 to 1981, Holden was a Professor of Political Science/Public Policy Administration at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In 1975-77, he served on the Wisconsin Public Service Commission, and then in 1977-1981 on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, as it transitioned from the Federal Power Commission shortly before his arrival. He joined the University of Virginia faculty in 1981 and became the Henry L. and Grace M. Doherty Professor Emeritus of Politics. He has published numerous articles. He retired in 2002.
