- Matthew Fouts
Matthew Fouts was born on October 31, 1987. He grew up in a little town in Indiana, Terre Haute, having 60,000 residents. At the age of 4 he was introduced to the game of chess at the YWCA. He sat watching for hours other children setting up the board and playing the game. After a couple of days he challenged his father, Mark Fouts, to play against him. Surprised that he could play he accepted and was defeated after only a couple of games. Quickly realizing that he had talent Matthew was taken to chess master Craig Stauffer, to receive private lessons. For the next 14 years he devoted his life to chess, playing in 48 states in the US, and the Republic of Georgia for the 2003 European Cup when he was only 15 years old. He had the opportunity to play Hikaru Nakamura in a simul in the 1998 National Chess Tournament firmly holding him to a draw. Over the next few years he tied for 2nd 4 times in the US National High School Tournaments, while receiving various other awards as well in other styles of chess. On May 22, 2005 in Minnesota he tied for 2nd place in the richest open tournament ever held. To date he holds the biggest rating difference played in a game of chess, Matthew Fouts 950 vs. GM Giorgi Kaschievilli 2616. He is attending Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, perusing a degree in Engineering Physics. Currently he is attending Stanford taking summer classes.
