nihongo|Margaret Burton|マーガレット・バートン|Māgaretto Bāton is one of the two protagonists of the 26-episode anime television series "Madlax" produced in 2004 by the Bee Train animation studio. She is voiced by Houko Kuwashima in the Japanese version, while voiced by Luci Christian in the English version.

Description

Margaret is a sleepy, clumsy, absent-minded 17-year-old girl who attends an elite college for aristocratic families' children in Nafrece. She lives in an apartment with the maidservant Elenore Baker; she likes pasta. She doesn't stand-out in class except when she makes a fuss. Because she comes from a wealthy noble family, others people have always think of getting the Burton family fortune.

Due to the plane crash twelve years ago, Margaret's memories have been lost except the word "Madlax". Margaret is one of the rare people who possesses the "Gift", a mysterious ability which can alter the reality. She also has one of the three Holy Books, the one she has is "Secondary", the second volume of the set. When she was a child, she has a doll called Laetitia, which later became her personae.

Although Margaret is a petite young Nafrecian girl, she has some special connections with Secondari that helps her to feel others' thoughts, made them feel at ease and acknowledge others tries to take Secondari (even in her sleep. After the fusion with Madlax and Laetitia, she wears Madlax's usual white dress and adopts her supernatural fighting skills. She becomes a different person after Friday Monday used the "Word of Awakening" on her. Apparently , Margaret can sense what happens at Madlax's place

Past

Margaret and Poupée were the sole survivors of the plane crash caused by Friday Monday when he opened the "Door of Truth". As soon as the pair arrived at the war zone, Richard Burton gunned down Poupée and Margaret was reunited with her father. However, by using the "Word of Awakening", Monday drove Burton insane and forced him to shoot his own daughter. Defending herself, Margaret splitted her personae into three, the "Memory Keeper" Laetitia and the sinful Madlax. After shooting Burton, Margaret faced her personae Madlax. During their stand-off, Friday Monday addressed Colonel Burton only by his code name, which was "Madlax", and that was also the only word that two of Margaret's split personae later remembered.

A few months later, Margaret, with Secondari, returned to her residence in Nafrece. Since the incident, Margaret has lost her memories except the word "Madlax".

Meeting Madlax

At the beginning of the series, Margaret is shown as an easy-minded highschool student. Since she found "Secondary", Margaret has treasured it, calling it her father's present. Eventually she hires a "bibliodetective" named Eric Gillain to find the missing copies of Secondary.

After her first meeting with Carrossea Doon, he approached her since they had a lot in common.

When she learns that Vanessa involved in Gazth-Sonikan conflict, Margaret and Elenore accompanied by Carrossea immediately went to Gazth-Sonika. Eventually she meets Madlax and Vanessa; after explain the situation, the four go to Quanzitta Marison's village. She tells the four about the three Holy Books, and Margaret intends to collect all the books to regain her memories.

Opening the Door of Truth

However, when Madlax asks Quanzitta about her purpose of existence, both Margaret and Madlax examine the Holy Books. During the examination, they both learn that Madlax killed Richard Burton. Then Carrossea approaches Margaret and tells her that she will lead them to the "Door of Truth". As he discovers the truth that he died 12 years ago, and held on to life only by sheer force of will to protect Margaret. Carrossea dies forever, and Margaret is captured by Monday who attempts to use her abilities to complete his own goals.

Monday using his abilities to mesmerize Margaret, making her to wander around the forest. Later, she witnesses Vanessa's death, mistaking that Madlax killed her tutor, she guns down Madlax and is soon recaptured by Monday again. Now using his abilities, Monday makes Margaret to think that he is her father. Madlax, accompanied by Elenore and Nakhl, intend to free her. During the search, Elenore is killed and Margaret, now under Friday Monday's control, shoots Madlax as she believes she kills her friends and father.

Together, Margaret and Monday open the "Door"; Monday commences a ritual to unleash people's dark sides and trigger worldwide anarchy. However, Margaret's memories return when she witness that she killed her own father and she snaps out of Monday's control. Madlax reappears and shoots Monday, followed by Margaret fusing with her personae. She then shoots Monday, making him disappears. Margaret now understands everything, fuses with Madlax and Laetitia, and saving the world from insanity.

After Monday's death, she once splits herself into three again and judging by what happened, she convinces Madlax to continue live on. The series ends with Limelda driving Madlax out of the war zone while Margaret, now as Laetitia's older sister, watching a Nafrece dawn.

Relationships

Madlax

She is one of Margaret's personae. According to Vanessa, she's the same age of Margaret. Margaret blames her for killing Vanessa and her father. Because of this, Margaret hates and shoots Madlax, but after she found that she is her persona, Margaret gladly accept her existence as she convinces her to continue live on as Madlax.

Elenore Baker

Margaret's private maidservant, they were friends since childhood. Due to her return 12 years ago, Elenore swore to take care of Margaret. She believes that Margaret is her only family left and taking care of her is her wish. Elenore cares deeply about Margaret, she even disguised herself as a student in order to protect her master. Margaret's everyday activities are personally taken care by Elenore.

Vanessa Renee

Margaret's private tutor and next door neighbor. When Margaret was 15, she left Nafrece for business; she met Margaret when she saw her gazing at the red shoes. According to her own opinion, it was because of her good teaching that Margaret is able to go to school as a normal student.

Carrossea Doon

They first met twelve years ago, Carrossea approaches Margaret as he wants her to lead him to the "Door of Truth"; but since the Door opened, he has to disappear. Before disappearing, he confesses his love to an unconscious Margaret.
