American Viticultural Area located between theMississippi River and theOhio River in southernIllinois . Thewine appellation includes over convert|2140|sqmi|km2 of land in portions of Alexander, Gallatin, Hardin, Jackson, Johnson, Pope, Pulaski, Randolph, Saline, Union, and Williamson counties. The region stretches approximately convert|80|mi|km|-1 east-west and convert|20|mi|km|-1 north-south, and includes the vast majority of theShawnee National Forest .The AVA was created as a result of the successful petition of Ted Wichmann, owner of
