- Ralph Brideoake
Ralph Brideoake (1613-1679) was an English churchman, who became
bishop of Chichester .He was born in
Cheetham Hill ,Lancashire and graduated fromBrasenose College, Oxford .He was High Master at
Manchester Free School from 1638 [ [http://www.mgs.org/view_page.asp?sel_sub_menu_id=248&sel_menu_id=112§ion_id=1&page_id=419 The Manchester Grammar School - High Masters ] ] , but lost the position because of his Royalist affiliation. He became chaplain toJames Stanley, 7th Earl of Derby , a Royalist leader. Brideoake with Stanley's family was besieged at Lathom House [ [http://www.mancuniensis.info/Chronology/Chronology1678FPX.htm Chronology 1678 ] ] , in 1644. He interceded unsuccessfully withWilliam Lenthall , Speaker of Parliament, for a stay of the execution of the captured Earl, in 1651 [ [http://www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook/people/lords/lathom.htm Lathom, Knowsley and the Stanleys ] ] . Brideoake then became chaplain to Lenthall.He was vicar of
