Seta, Greece

Seta or Setta (Greek: Σέτα, rarely Σέττα), also Ano Seta also with the first e accented is a town in the northern part of the island of Euboea. It it also in the municipality of Amarynthos. Its 2001 population was 147 for the village and 201 for the municipal district.

Setta is located 40 km from Eretria, 60 to 70 km from Chalkida, about 160 to 170 km north-northeast of the capital city of Athens (not counting the Oropos - Nea Psara and 70 to 80 km direct) and 18 km NNE of Amarynthos.

Geography

Seta is built on a mountainous setting near the heart of the island, the mountain range surround the area. The area around Seta are made up of forests and includes pines and spruce trees. Farmlands are in the lower areas. It is connected with a road connecting the GR-44 (Thiva - Chalkida - Eretria - Karystos).

History

Seta joined the country of Greece after the Ottoman rule which dominated the country as well as the village as well as the Greek War of Independence. After World War II and the Greek Civil War, its buildings were rebuilt. Its inhabitants left for larger towns and cities in Greece and around the world.

Seta was connected to the media, almost no films were filmed in Seta except for its documentaries. A traveling program "Travelling in Greece" ("Menoume Ellada)" in late-2006.

The forest fire ravaged the entire portion of Seta and Kato Seta (the entire municipal district) on August 25 and August 26, 2007 (see 2007 Greek forest fires), almost every forest was in flames and ruined its natural beauty, some parts were unaffected. The village suffered moderate damages and its residents were stranded and fought the fire along with firefighters, fire trucks and planes that also came from other parts of Europe. The fire lasted several days. It may take nearly a decade or more to recover the natural beauty. Since that time, the village has been repairing.

The town and almost the entire municipality with small sporadic exceptions. The fires on August 24 and 26 came from Aliveri. Its hotels were damaged but its buildings were protected from the fire, the centre of the village was protected by firefighters. Firefighters along with . The fire lasted several days. Several groves and forests will take several decades to recover to its original level.

Other

Seta has a school, churches, a post office, a restaurant, a bar, a tavern and a square ("plateia"). Its nearest lyceum (middle school) and gymnasium (secondary school) are in Amarynthos.
