American Viticultural Area located in Delta County,Colorado , near the town of Paonia. The highest altitudevineyard s in the northern hemisphere are planted in the West Elks AVA. Located within theRocky Mountains of west central Colorado, vineyards in the AVA range from convert|5400|ft|m|0 to convert|6400|ft|m|0above sea level . The surrounding mountains limit access to the area, and the only roads into the West Elks AVA cross mountain passes of at least convert|11000|ft|m|0 elevation.References
