- Sheehan Islands
Sheehan Islands (coord|67|22|S|59|46|E|) is a group of small islands lying at the southeast side of Islay in the
William Scoresby Archipelago . Discovered onFebruary 18 ,1931 , by theBritish Australian New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) under Mawson. He named one of the groupSheehan Nunatak afterH.H. Sheehan , Asst. Secretary to the Treasury, who was Secretary of theAustralian Antarctic Committee of BANZARE. BANZARE erroneously charted Sheehan Nunatak as lying behind the coastline. The insularity of the group was determined by DI personnel on theWilliam Scoresby onFebruary 27 ,1936 . The islands were more fully mapped by Norwegian cartographers from aerial photographs taken by theLars Christensen Expedition in January and February 1937.See also
