Macchiponpu

Macchiponpu

Matchi pompu (alternate romanization "macchi ponpu") is a Japanese expression and an example of so-called "Engrish". The phrase was coined by combining two loanwords from English, "match" and "pump". The basic, literal underlying concept of the phrase is 'the use of a match to set a fire, followed by the use of a pump to douse the fire with water'. The expression implies the act of creating a problem with the intent of solving it for personal gain. "Matchi pompu" is said to have been first used in Japan in the 1960s [citation needed] .
