A Grande Arte

"A Grande Arte" (""A Great Art") is a book written by Brazilian writer Rubem Fonseca and also a 1991 thriller movie starring Peter Coyote.

The book deals with a lawyer, Mandrake, who is trying to track down the killers of a Rio de Janeiro prostitute who was his friend. After being caught and nearly killed by the pair of hired killers, his desire for vengeance grows stronger and the he unveils the mystery behind a large underworld criminal organization based in Brazil.

Eventually the clues take him from the dark alleys of Rio to the dry highlands of Bolivia. One possible meaning of the title is that it refers to the art of knife fighting, which the protagonist learns in order to defend himself. The movie features a lengthy training sequence with a knife master.

In the book a lawyer discovers the secrets of the organization, while in the movie Peter Mandrake is an American photographer. For this reason the movie is also known as "Exposure" in the U.S. market.
